What to do in Pompeii

The Vesuvius is the main symbol of the area: it is one of the most explored volcanoes in the world, visible from most Neapolitan cities, and a friendly companion (although still active) of all Neapolitan people. Visiting the crater is something you must experience at least once in a lifetime: you can enjoy a panorama that will take your breath away here!

Not far from the most famous city of Pompeii, it is also worth visiting the ancient Herculaneum(also destroyed by the tragic eruption of 79 AD). Here too, walking around the streets of the ancient city, you can get a clear idea of the life and customs in the Roman era. Moreover, the different burial dynamics, compared to the nearby Pompeii, have allowed for a better conservation of organic materials and housing.

A few steps from the beautiful, picturesque Herculaneum excavations, stands the MAV, one of the most famous virtual museums in Italy. We advise you not to miss it: inside you will find videos and reconstructions of the Vesuvian cities before the tragic eruption of 79 AD, it will seem like you are living the daily life of Imperial Rome: a truly unique experience!

Halfway between Pompeii and Herculaneum, also not to be missed, are the wonderful Villa of Oplonti, an example of a Roman OTIUM villa in Torre Annunziata, and the archaeological area of Villa Regina in Boscoreale which, in contrast, offers an example of a rustic villa.

Castellammare di Stabia is one of the most beautiful cities in the province of Naples, famous for its many archaeological beauties and for its proximity to Pompeii (just a few minutes away) and Sorrento. The city, attractive and well looked after, hosts beautiful shops and breathtaking views. It is also known for its spas (you will find sparkling water fountains throughout the city!) and is a strategic point for visiting Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

The Ginestre villa is located in Leopardi, a hamlet of Torre del Greco, and is famous for hosting the great poet Giacomo Leopardi(during the latter stage of his life), who composed some of his famous works here, such as 'La Ginestra', which gave the name to the villa. This delightful mansion, part of the villas of the Miglio d'Oro(Goldem Mile), hosts cultural and literary events and a small, charming museum in honour of the poet.

In Pietrarsa, the first railway section in Italy was built and here there is a rail museum adjacent to the Pietrarsa-San Giorgio railway station in Cremano. The museum, built on the site of the royal Bourbon factory in Pietrarsa, houses old steam locomotives, machinery from the former workshop and the perfectly preserved carriage-salon of the Savoy train.
